You Can Call Him the Weather Maker

Last Thursday I was hanging out at Drinking Liberally. Much of the talk was about the Marrero/Spence race. Taking a step back and looking at the changes that have happened in the past year and half, it is kind of amazing the degree of change that has happened in the local political environment. Bowers is gone. The Fords have almost completely been vanquished by their own hands. The Herenton faction is riding high and Cohen was elected to Congress. The later events are of particular interest.

Cohen’s election has come at a cost to white Democrats. Cohen broke the unspoken agreement of white democrats holding seats like Senate District 30 and House District 93. With that agreement now gone, a candidate like Spence is going after Marrero. Some may have thought with Cohen’s backing, she was a shoe in for the seat. With early voting over, less than 350 people voted. Spence is running radio ads, robo-calling, and has signs around the district. All I’ve seen of Marrero is a few yard signs. It doesn’t seem like either candidate is doing much door to door canvassing. Late Thursday, we’ll know if Cohen has any political coattails.

The collapse of the Fords has contributed greatly to the ascendancy of the Herenton faction. That faction no longer is content to just have local elected positions and is moving on to state level offices after doing especially well with County Commission elections. District 30 was just the first spot open and some of the bloggers think 93 is next. But I don’t think the movement against these seats is driven by race or political ideology. The Herenton faction is doing this simply because it can. Why not consolidate power when you have the political forces to do it? I’m sure Herenton will push on the City Council as well. By the end of Herenton’s 16th year, he will be the sole, political weather maker. It’s Herenton’s world and we’re all just squirrels looking for a nut.

The question becomes, what are white democrats going to do? District 30 may be lost by Friday. Chumney’s city council position will be gone because she is going to unsuccessfully run for mayor. Mike Kernell will come up in 2008 again and he’ll probably face a primary challenger back by the Herenton machine. That will leave 89. One of Del Gill’s biggest complaints has been the over-representation of white democrats, especially on the Executive Committee. With the Herenton’s consolidation, I don’t think Del is going to have to worry too much about it anymore, aside from MSDIA. (Also, turnout in predominantly white areas was lower than in predominantly black areas in the November 2006 election.) So where does this leave Cohen? In 2008 he may be continuing his service in Congress at the pleasure of Herenton.

Tee hee hee. Herenton has a "faction" like Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. It's all an illusion. What Hereton has done is give a means of participation to numbers of people who are interested in local government, but did not want to pay homage to the Fords. Those people are NOT tightly aligned into a "faction". And why is it always about race. There are some - not many, I admit - but some of our black neighbors who are thoughtful, moderates and liberals on local and national political issues. As I white person I feel properly represented by someone who agrees with my positions, even if they are not white. It seems like you are saying that someone has to be white first and then right on the issues second? Maybe I've just been reading too much of that racist garbage on the Thaddeus Matthews blog . . . and I misunderstand.

This post simply illustrates the contention I have assert and was put forward by Desi Franklin on WTL about a week or so ago. African Americans the most loyal constituency the Democratic Party has cannot count on that same party loyalty when they are the party standard bearer. We find white folks like PD and LWC more concerned with having elected officials be of a certain race than about Democratic Party representation or good government. And to mention the issue of race as an African American nowadays makes YOU a racist.

You guys simply amaze me. You profess to be these paragons of liberalism, but you are just wolves in sheep’s clothing. At least we (AA) know where the Republicans stand. They have no concern for the issues that matter to AA and they make no bones about it. But you guys hide your hoods and smile in the face of AA for their votes. When it's time to support the AA candidate you are no where to be found.

How many of you will line up behind the candidacy of Robert Spence when he becomes the nominee or will you just not vote or maybe even support the candidacy of Larry Parrish? Or will you just continue to do what my late mother would describe as "throwing rocks and hiding your hands."

You don't have to tell me that African Americans are the most loyal voting block in the Democratic party. I've seen the vote totals in local elections to prove it. White democrats don't vote down party lines.
It also doesn't matter what race a person is to be an elected official. I wrote about this topic because change has and continues to come and it would be interesting to see how they react, especially white democrats.

Anon 6:44. Damn, chill out and slow down on making uninformed assumptions.

PD, that's all they have. I have voted for and supported African-Americans county and city-wide for 30 years, and I'm not going to let anonymous posters race-bait me, and neither should you.

Tee hee hee. Someone's a little sensitive - touch a nerve, maybe???

What I don't understand is why the Democrats have chosen to slaughter each other and create racial hooey to boot in the District 30 deal. If the white lady, Marrero, is defeated she stills serves in the General Assembly, right? And the black guy, Spence, serves too. Somebody explain to me why Democrats - when confronted with a win-win situation like that - start shooting at each other and fear-mongering about the extinction of “white democrats.” (your term, not mine)

It seems sort of goofy to me. (D-E-E-P breath. Ahhhhhhh.)

Well, folks, whaddaya think?

it was more about class than race, IMO, because people knew Spence represented the big shots downtown and not the people he would have represented.

Spence would be better off in a Council or Commission race.....
