Knowing About Memphis Part 2-Employment
Part 2 is basic data about employment and jobs. The first map shows how many jobs are in each zip code. The airport and Lamar Ave is the largest employment center by far. The poplar corridor does has many along with Collierville. This next maps shows the number of employed people over 16 years old who live in that census tract. The urban core of Memphis has a dearth of employed people. Remember back to Part 1 of this series that much of these areas have disproportionately older populations, yet these areas also have serious unemployment problems. It is amazing in Memphis how there can exist bordering census tracts that on one side unemployment is less than 5% and the other side is greater than 31%. Polarization. Update- Here is a site by the Census bureau that gives analysis of employment. Enter the zip code, city, etc and it will give you choices for analysis. Here is an example Update 2- I may as well show you where people who work in Memphis live.
