Knowing About Memphis Part 1- Age

The 2010 Census data has been out for a while and there are a lot of cool things to be mapped. One of the concepts I have tried to show through mapping is that 2 Memphis' exist. I think when people start to see many of these variables mapped, it will become clear how different it is to live in Black Memphis and White Memphis. Every day or two I will post some more maps usually centered on a theme. Today's theme is age. The first map is median age by census tract. Median Age

Memphis and Shelby County have areas distinct areas where old and young people live. East Memphis and Germantown are OOOLLLDDD. South Memphis and North Memphis are old as well. Westwood is old and Whitehaven is getting older. Younger black folks have migrated to parts of Frayser, Raliegh, Parkway Village, Hickory Hill and Cordova (Desoto County as well) for better housing stock and proximity to economic opportunity. The closing of the Navy Base in Millington really hurt northern Shelby County. Hardly any young families are there. Percentage of population 65 years old or older

Barely any children live in Midtown, Downtown, and along the Poplar Corridor compared to other areas. Children are concentrated in Frayser, Northern Raliegh, Parkway Village, Hickory Hill, and spots on the west side of the the Airport. Aside from a few pockets here and there, people have decided they don't want to/can not raise their children in the 240 loop. Percentage of Population who are children 19 year old or younger
