Who's Tired of Pit Bull Advocates?
Me, that's who.
I see this report on channel 24 news about the Memphis Animal Shelter putting down euthanizing pit bulls. Yes, it is unfortunate that there are way too many pit bulls in Memphis overwhelming the shelter. They drive up government costs in multiple ways via animal control, law enforcement, the court system, and the medical system unlike any other breed. In November I wrote a blog piece using actual police data about how many times the police get called to deal with dogs and how many people get bitten. I'm sorry the overwhelming percentage of incidents is related to pit bulls, but they are. I'm sorry 100% of the 183 people attacked by dogs between January and August 2011 are in black and hispanic neighborhoods, but they are. Pit bulls are a serious public health and law enforcement issue in Memphis. Since we can't deal with pit bulls on the front end of the problem with a spay/neuter ordinance, the city has to deal with it on the back end by euthanizing all these dogs.
As for these pit bull advocates and their superior morality. It easy to get on your high horse in East Memphis, Midtown, or any predominantly white areas when you don't have to live with the consequences of stray pit bulls terrorizing your neighborhood. You don't have to see people mauled and even killed by these dogs. Your outrage is a grotesque farce born out of ignorance and class/race privilege.
