also, just got back from New Orleans. Drove through some less-touristy parts, as David made me navigate without a map - just my iPhone GPS that could NOT keep up with our speed. :) It was VERY similar to lots of parts of Memphis...probably worse...at least more out in the open. There was a gathering of the homeless in a median on a major street. They brought chairs and dogs and just sat around drinking and talking. A few blocks away was the mission. There was a grassy lot filled with people in wheelchairs and people with sleeping bags just hanging out.
The Quarter itself (and Marigny) were really clean and felt safe enough. We walked back from the Marigny around 2 last night and didn't encounter anything weirder that some white waif-like chick who was TRIPPING BALLS or something. She was all kind of shifty and scary/scared.
We saw several drug deals in plain sight in the course of our two days there. Crack, weed, pills. You name it.
The actual homeless in the Quarter don't even really ask for money. They are either street performers or artists or something or they just kind of hang out and hope someone'll give them a beer. There are a lot of crackheads - but they are so oblivious to everything around you that they blow right past you with nary a glance.
It was pretty weird. Very different from the aggressiveness that I see in Memphis so frequently.
Anyway - I don't have much of a point here, other than there are both striking similarities AND differences between New Orleans and Memphis. It was strange to be there for a couple of days.
