Carol Chumney- Welcome to Political Oblivion
I don't really know what Carol Chumney is thinking. She has politically maxed out. She will never get elected to anything higher than city council. I don't understand why she can't see this. It's like she's Wily Coyote and she's trying to defy the laws of political gravity through obliviousness.
"When the right opportunity presents itself for public service, I'll be ready to again offer my 17 years of state and local government experience, my platform of positive change, my passion, drive and dedication to making this a world-class city, for consideration by the voters."
Huh? When the time is right? When will that be?
When Deidre Malone runs for county mayor in 2010- No, because Deidre Malone will whip her six ways to Sunday.
When AC Wharton or Myron Lowery run for city mayor in 2011- No. They will whip her seven ways to Sunday. (She's not splitting the black vote either and sliding through with the vote vote. White folks are going to vote for AC and Myron more than Chumney.)
The only way Carol Chumney has any political relevance or future is for her to run in this special election and get back on the council. Otherwise, she will never get re-elected to the council again and she will never be mayor. Why she can't figure this out is beyond me.

Carol made a very wise decision yesterday. She was obviously being practical and thinking logically. It may be that others are thinking more emotionally about the decision she made due to their loyalty and friendship.
She made the right choice to sit out this election and rest assured, when the right race comes along for her,she will jump in and so will all of her supporters.

Her supporters aren't going anywhere. I can't imagine not getting into the race hurts any politico's future chances.

I'm sorry to disagree, but could one of you all tell me the last time an incumbent lost a city council election? It was Van Der Schaf vs Scott McCormick. Incumbents don't lose in Memphis, TN. They either resign under legal problems, go to jail, term limits, or just get tired. What city council seat will be available? Not her old one. Jim Strickland has 7 more years to go there. What about the Super District? No incumbents there too. She will never be mayor of the county or city either. The reason she did as well in the mayor's as she did was because she was running against Herenton. He's not going to run again. AC and Myron are popular enough to pull white votes.
No worries though, because in a few years we'll be able to check the archives on the blogs and say "I guess Chumney should have run in that Super District special election back in 2008."

Sounds like you and her supporters need to start a write-in campaign for Ms Chumney to save her from political oblivion (and from the hands of other office holders).
A political intervention? Maybe her supporters need a 5 step program? Don't know.

Carol is a narcissist of the worst order. Who in their right mind calls a press conference to say she's NOT RUNNING? Stupid, stupid, stupid. But the bigger idiots were those in the media who reported it. The other Council members were greatly relieved she's not running. The Council staff has no use for her and were thrilled she's not running. She needs to keep her day job and not expect to be on the public trough anymore. Good riddance.
