More on the Mayor's Race and the Commercial Appeal Polling Data

Here is my take on the Commercial Appeal article in today’s Sunday paper. First, close to 80,000 people have voted already. As noted in my previous post, 18% of the electorate was undecided but waiting for polling data to see who had the best chance of knocking off Herenton. That Yacoubian poll showing Chumney was close to Herenton tipped the scales in her favor. I think most of those people early voting are highly motivated anti-Herenton folks.

I also don’t think Herenton supporters are as motivated. A buddy of mine has a focus group on Chelsea Ave in North Memphis. Technically it’s not a focus group but rather a barber shop. My buddy was there Friday. Normally this is Herenton country. Well, those voters weren’t too motivated in their defense of Herenton’s service as mayor. My friend asked the why he should support Herenton. Only one guy said the Herenton talking points. Those talking points were quickly dismissed and no one else came to Herenton’s defense. My buddy knew he was speaking the truth because the people in the barber shop silently nodded in agreement and chuckled at the Herenton critiques.

That’s a bad sign for Herenton and this ties into the 14% who refuse to answer the Commercial Appeal poll. 75% of those folks were black voters. Even if Herenton got all of them, that only translates into 10.5% of the electorate. So add that to the 24% and you only get 34.5%. Which is the conventional wisdom of what many people thinks he has. (I’ve actually placed a bet saying he will not get 36% or more of the vote.)

I’d like to note one other thing the Commercial Appeal had written earlier this week. Morris only has $11,000 on hand. Chumney has $18,000, and Herenton has close to $200,000. Morris’ campaign did not release polling data showing him in the lead prior to the Yacoubin poll. If they really had proof Morris was leading they would have released it earlier in order to get those undecided voters. They didn’t and they lost momentum from all the free media coverage showing Chumney close to Herenton. I did hear the Morris campaign tried to put out polling data later in the week showing him leading Chumney. It didn’t get much coverage because I had to have somebody tell about this response. I don’t think Morris has a very good get out the vote operation. I think Chumney has a better one. But this could be where Herenton puts up his best defense. Is he willing to spend a king’s ransom and pull out all the stops on GOTV. Buses, free food, etc. Unless he’s willing to spend that $200,000 next week and especially Thursday, I think he’s done and Chumney is the new mayor of Memphis.

What are you smoking? There is no way a white woman, especially one with no executive or leadership experience, is going to be elected mayor. Herenton will be pulling out all the stops, including bringing in Harold Ford Sr., to assure his victory. It's sad because Herman Morris would make a superb mayor. I still have high hopes that remaining voters in the black community will realize it's time for Herenton to go. Herman won't embarrass us and he will unite this city.

Herman Morris will make a worse mayor than he made a president of MLGW, and that's pretty bad.

He has no leadership skills and did not inspire any of the employees (except the upper management, whose respect he purchased with golden parachutes). The respone to the so-called "Hurricane Elvis" was horrible, and Morris brags about that like it's the greatest thing he ever did in his life. If that's the best he can do, he should go hide himself in shame.

We in the black community know Herman Morris and know him to be a liar (i.e., he didn't have anything to do with "the list," until he finally was pressed into the corner - caught - and had to admit it was his idea. Then he lied about why he did it. "My mother just had a stroke and I wanted her to be able to get in touch with me." LMAO. Yo mama don't have yo home or cellaphone numbers, Herman?)

Carol Chumney has shown that she cares for all Memphians through the years, she has leadership and executive experience and many of us in the AA community (especially us women) already have voted for her.

We're tired of black and white issues. Carol will take care of the issue that we care about - trying to give us a safe community where we can raise our kids to be decent productive citizens.

Willie and Herman, yal need to go somewhere and sit down!

Hey Anonymous, what are you smoking?
Harold Ford Sr to campaign for Herenton. You need a history lesson.

Wow,
Herenton is going to bring in Harold Ford Sr. That would be quite a coup. Especially since the Herenton and Ford factions have been at each other's throats. Plus, if the Ford's ever want a chance at a comeback in local politics, it would be a lot easier with Herenton gone and his faction shattered.
But if Herenton looses to Chumney, the person who benefits will be Wharton. He'll be the last guy standing and walk to an easy victory for Memphis mayor in four years.

Go read Jackson Baker's column at www.memphisflyer.com right now.

And to the individual who thinks Carol can lead, let me tell ya: you don't know her. Carol is for Carol and no one else.

In my view, the wealthy and powerful city “leaders”, who elected and controlled King Willy for much of his sixteen year reign have a new champion or puppet: Prince Morris. They are now risking Memphis' future by splitting the vote of the 65% plus who want anyone but King Willy in a bid to keep their oligarchy a live.
They are risking our future to guarantee their agenda, which has lead our Memphis into being the most violent city in America.
We need a public servant not a puppet, a king, or a prince. We need a champion of the people. We need someone who is beholding to the people not to their handlers. We need a Mayor who will standup for what they believe not what will pad their campaign’s pockets (or worse) or their cronies pockets.
Our Memphis “leaders” have their eye on the city council too. They want to have a royal court at their disposal. Just look at all the large campaign signs in strip malls all over Memphis.
I wish our "leaders" would just publish a ballet like Herenton or the Ford's do and come out of the backrooms where they rule from now. They could call their ballet the “Aristocrat Club”.
Until the people of Memphis get involved and vote for people who are best qualified and NOT the candidates who are members of the “Aristocrat Club” we will continue to be stuck in backward river city mode! Get involved and vote for the best candidate.

Ok Anonymous 2:19pm, I'll say it before you do, I told you so!
Wow you must be smoking some really strong stuff to get the jump on that story.

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation between WW and Sr. That is a Trump type deal for to him to get Sr here.

Morris was an excellent leader at MLGW & the facts back it up. During Morris’ tenure, MLGW was named Corporation of the Year and earned the Tennessee Quality Excellence Award--the state’s highest award for quality. MLGW, under his leadership, also received the Standard and Poor’s AAA rating in 1998 and the Moody’s Investor Services AAA rating in 2001.

Backing up a bit:
As a Memphis leader, he has served as Chairman of the Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Memphis Branch of the NAACP, and Chairman of the Tennessee Supreme Court Board of Professional Responsibility which provides discipline and ethical guidance for Tennessee attorneys, and Chairman of the Shelby County Home Rule Charter Commission, which was responsible for the redrafting of the Shelby County charter. Further service includes service on the Tennessee Judicial Selection Commission and the Memphis and Tennessee Bar Foundation Boards.

In 1989, Herman Morris became the first in-house general counsel of Memphis, Light, Gas, and Water, one of the country’s largest municipal utilities. Then in 1997 he became MLGW’s President and CEO, being the first African-American to lead one of America’s major utilities.

There is a very definite reason the MLGW's retirees are backing him, and it isn't because they are retired execs. This group is made up of all retirees with the oargest part of them being the little guys who spent 25-30 + years at the utility. They know who fought for them. They know who knows how to negotiated a union contract with the city council & mayor.... and did it without being a horses behind... getting them good raises without it costing the rate payers a thing. Morris is the man who knew how to manage the company's money and did it well. It was Willie's crony Joe Lee who sent MLGW spiraling down the tubes.

I have totally lost respect for Carol Chumney for ignoring the gay community. I have gained respect for Herman Morris for being the ONLY candidate for Mayor to reach out and actively seek the support of gays and lesbians. He has my Vote!

If Chumney really wanted to win, she should have at least asked us for support.

Carol Chumney, rather than "begging" the gay community for its support, has shown her support of the gay community in the legislature and throughout her career. Her actions speak louder than Herman Morris' words.

And Herman Morris' words in this instance, just like when he said he knew nothing about who created the now-infamous "list," will be proven here, as there, to be lies. He says what he has to say then will screw you over everytime unless you're rich (extremely rich), powerful or "kin" to him.

Carol Chumney, on the other hand, doesn't have to beg for support or lie about what she will do. She has a proven track record as a friend to the gay community.

In the interest of full disclosure, Mr. Maynard, tell us how many times you've "flip flopped" been bought and sold and screwed over the gay community for your own gain or advancement. Despite your self-appointment as "the decider" and spokesman for the entire gay community, those of us who are in the community and KNOW you, know not to trust you. Your endorsement of Herman Morris in the gay community means as much as Thaddeus Matthews' endorsement in the Memphis community===the kiss of death.

But thanks for your opinion; you've solidified my support for Ms Chumney with your endorsement of Herman Morris.

Carol Chumney has never done a damn thing for the gay community because she's so afraid of being labeled a lesbian. Tell me one thing she has done. She never supported progressive legislation because she wants to be "centrist." She is a complete joke and we need her out of all elective offices.

Excuse me...
Please explain that personal attack upon me!
How have I "flip-flopped, been bought and sold and screwed over the gay community" for my own gain or adancement"??? I have never appointed myself the spokesmen for the gay community.
I am not "the decider" for the gay community.. Herman Morris was endorsed by the TENNESSEE EQUALITY PROJECT and the MEMPHIS STONEWALL DEMOCRATS because he responded to their questions and supports equal rights for gays and lesbians. ASSHOLE.
Now go fuck yourself, or why not email me or call me and we can discuss your personal attacks on me face to face.. if you have the balls.

Let's have a personal discussion about how I've screwed and sold out the gay community..
you can email me at jmaynard2@yahoo.com or call me at 327-2677
I'd be glad to hear you out. But I"m not going to take anything seriously you have to say until I know who the fuck you are.

Carol Chumney has done little, if anything, for the gay community. She evidenlty believes supporting gay rights will cost her votes and therefore does not want to commit to supporting anything for the gay communty. She won't support a non-discriminatinon ordinance (she actually told people there are already laws to protect gays, THERE ARE NOT!) or domestic partnershp benefits for city employees. Herman supports both. Now even if he only says he does to get gay votes, that is more than the other candidates have done...

He deserves our vote for supporting equal rights for gays and lesbians and not hiding from the gay community as Chumney has done.
