Race and Partisanship in Shelby County-Part II

Here is the total republican turnout from the primary election in the spring of 2006. Red precicnts had the highest raw turnout. Here is some demographic data about that election.

Republican turnout total: 25401
White: 20916 = 82.3%
Hispanics: 2
Black: 462 = 1.8%
Other: 4018 = 15.8%
Asian: 1

I'm not sure what falls under "other" or why people choose that self indentification, to each his/her own.

I'm kind of interested in this subject because of a debate I was taking part in over at LWC. Separating race from politics is a difficult subject in Memphis and Shelby county. As Del Gill often notes Black folks are extremely loyal to the Democratic party and will vote for the white Democratic nominees. A major factor in Cohen's election. But white democrats are not as loyal. Tying partisan and non-partisan elections to each other are a little problematic, but I think in a mayor's race with more than 2 candidates and racially mixed will cause polarization. Especially coming on the heels of Cohen's election.

I also did this map to show that Republican talk of diversity is bullshit. This is what the republican party looks like 38 after the southern strategy.
