Katrina Cuts Iraq Support

A friend and I talked about this the first few days after Katrina. You could see it interviews with hurricane victims. So many of them said “Bush could send troops and billions of dollars to Iraq but couldn’t send help to Americans in Louisiana and Mississippi.” Now people are the connection that if relief efforts are this screwed in the United States, how bad must reconstruction and war be going in Iraq? The question for the Democratic Party is how much longer will it take for the Party to get behind the Feingold plan. His plan is the responsible and addresses withdrawal. If the party does not present an alternative to the American people, why would they decide to vote for democrats even if they don’t want republican’s.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. public support for President George W. Bush's Iraq policy has nosedived in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but this seems unlikely to force the administration to change tack, political analysts said on Wednesday.

A Gallup poll published on Monday found 66 percent of respondents favored the immediate withdrawal of some or all of the U.S. troops in Iraq, a 10 percentage point jump in two weeks.

Bush's personal approval on Iraq fell from 40 percent to 32 percent in the same period. In a CBS/New York Times poll the previous week, 75 percent said Bush had no clear plan for bringing U.S. troops home.
